Businesses are Reducing the Spread of COVID-19

The novel coronavirus pandemic has changed the way people live and work. Businesses play an important role in response to the spread of COVID-19. As companies start to reopen, it is important for owners to create a plan to keep the virus from spreading at their workplace and protect their employees’ health and safety. Here are some ways on how businesses and employers reduce the spread of COVID-19.

1. Encouraging sick employees to stay at home
Businesses and employers can help to reduce the potential spread of virus in their office by encouraging sick employees to stay at home whether or not they have been tested for novel coronavirus. If an employee is sick whether with COVID-19 or not, a business should do its part by encouraging the employee to stay home until their symptoms subside. This will reduce the spread of the virus to other employees or people they encounter on their commute.

2. Improving office hygiene and cleanliness
The coronavirus has spread in communities among people who do not show symptoms, which is part of the reason it has become a pandemic. This makes it important to have a clean work environment and encourage employees to practice good hygiene habits. Businesses have to improve their office hygiene by cleaning their office more often, offering hand sanitizers and providing disinfectant wipes. Implementing better hygiene practices among employees will help keep an office and its workers safe.

3. Implementing social distancing
Employers must encourage flexible work arrangements such as teleworking or staggered shifts if feasible. With this, businesses will help to minimize face-to-face contact between employees. Implementing physical distancing in the work space and communal areas such as when eating, using the toilet and queuing is also important. Businesses have to maintain one (1) meter distance per person to reduce the transmission of the infectious disease.

4. Reducing business travel
There are restrictions on traveling to domestic and international. Some cities issued quarantine orders while some countries have barred other nationalities from entering. As a result, some companies have restricted business travel as well. Businesses must reduce all non-essential business travel to prevent employees from catching or spreading the virus and keep employees safe.

5. Suspending events
Large gatherings might contract or inadvertently spread the virus. It puts the individuals at risk in getting sick. Events or mass gatherings such as seminars, conventions and social gatherings have been temporarily prohibited in order to avoid situations where one might be close to other people so as to avoid the transmission.

6. Asking employees to work remotely
One of the best ways to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 is to ask employees to work from home. Although some industries especially the service-based ones are not conducive to remote work, employers should not make employees who are able to work remotely to come to the office. Technology makes it easy for people to still be productive from home. Businesses should let employees work remotely if possible, but if unable, employers should consider to let them stay at home without penalty.
